About OKC
The Oahu Kite Club was started in 2004 and we hopefully have retained most of our members from the Oahu Chapter of the Hawaii Kiteboarding Association (HKA). OKC is a localized group who's main charter is to focus on Oahu related issues with kitesurfing. Previously, we had been part of HKA, which attempted to be a state-wide organization. It became clear that having a state-wide kitesurfing association was ineffective, and had clearly different issues (sometimes conflicting) on each island. As a result, HKA was broken up into island-based organizations.
Hawaii Kiteboarding Association (HKA) originally started on Oahu, and was established in Year 2001 by a group of concerned kiters that wanted to simply preserve access for kiteboarding and help keep kiting a safe sport. We had a lot meetings with the Neighborhood board, DLNR, and other organizations. We also had regular meetings with the kiters in the area. This was necessary due to kiteboarding being a new sport to Kailua, and Hawaii in general.
Now as Oahu Kiteboarding Club (OKC) our main mission is to still keep kiteboarding safe, and address issues as they come up, but another focus is to keep kiteboarding FUN !!
Thankfully, after all this time, we are happy to say we have not had any major accidents with kiteboarding in Kailua. While there have been bumps and bruises and a few stitches (ouch!), thank fully no one has been seriously injured....However, last year in Mokuleia, one of our kiter friends from Kailua broke his back while kiting. It was an unfortunate incident, and shows that kitesurfing can have it's risks, as with any sport.
Oahu Kite Club will continue where HKA left off, to carry out the services to educate and assist those who are just starting out or are not familar with our area.
We continue to have the same goals to keep kiting safe, and preserve access, but Oahu Kite Club is a volunteer group. There are no dues, or responsibilities that we require from our members. It is geared to be a fun experience, and hopefully do some good along the way.
We are in the 4th year of OKC. Thanks to our members, we have participated in beach cleanups, working with offiicials, attending meetings, posting safety information, and maintaining this website for all.
We hope your kiting experiences are more fun, exciting, and safe in 2008 !
